RAPESEED meal can be used as a feed for livestock and poultry is a high protein-containing material. It's also called canola meal in North America, Australia and some other countries. The amounts of minerals Ca and P of the vitamin niacin and of choline are rather high, exceeding the amounts of these components in other valuable oil meals, i.e., soybean or sunflower. Global rapeseed meal production was 39.1 million t in 2015-2016 and has almost doubled since 2003.

Rapeseed oil as a foodstuff used to have a poor reputation because of the presence of erucic acid, which has a bitter taste. Rapeseeds are first crushed to remove the oil, yielding rapeseed cake as the first by-product which is further processed through solvent extraction, yielding rapeseed meal as the final product.

Oilseed rape is probably originated from Europe and is now grown worldwide and it is mostly cultivated in temperate areas but also grown in the tropics.

Rapeseeds can be ground and heat-processed to improve their digestibility and reduce their residual glucosinolate content for animals like cattle, pigs and poultry.

Whole rapeseeds are often called "full-fat rapeseeds" or "full-fat canola" to distinguish them from the oil meal. Rapeseeds are also a valuable energy feed for livestock due to their high protein and lipid content.

The protein value of rapeseed meal is higher than that of the majority of other vegetable proteins containing both lysine and sulphur amino acids. The amino acids of isolated rapeseed protein have been shown to be similar in composition to those of soybean protein, and present in higher concentrations.
